How to Hang a Frame with D-Rings: A Step-by-Step Guide

At Frame Center, we’re all about sharing our love of framing with you—whether we’re working with you one-on-one or providing resources to help you tackle framing projects on your own. Our video tutorials are here to give you the knowledge and confidence to complete simple framing tasks, like hanging a frame with D-rings.

In this guide, we’re breaking down the steps from our popular video tutorial, “How to Hang a Frame with D-Rings.” Ready to learn? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Mark the Wall for the Frame’s Center

Begin by deciding where you want the center of the frame to be. Use a pencil to make a small mark on the wall. Then, measure outward from this mark in both directions to ensure the center is perfectly aligned.

Step 2: Determine the Frame’s Height

Hold the frame up to the wall to find the height you like. Once you’ve decided, make a mark on the wall at the top of the frame.

Step 3: Cross the Lines

Using a level, draw a line that intersects your center mark and your height mark. This will be your reference point for the next steps.

Step 4: Measure the Frame

Before you move forward, you’ll need two key measurements from your frame:

The Drop: The distance from the top of the frame to the top of the D-rings.

The Spread: The distance between the two D-rings.

For example, in the video, the frame had a 10-inch drop and a 54-inch spread.

Step 5: Transfer Measurements to the Wall

Go back to your reference point on the wall: Measure down from the top mark by the drop distance (e.g., 10 inches).

From this point, measure outward in both directions, half the spread distance (e.g., 27 inches on either side for a 54-inch spread).

Step 6: Double-check with a Level

Use your level again to ensure the two spread marks are at the same height. This step ensures your frame will hang evenly.

Step 7: Hammer in the Hooks

Place the hooks so the bottom of each hook aligns perfectly with your marks. Hammer them into the wall securely.

Step 8: Hang the Frame

With the hooks in place, project the D-rings outward on the back of the frame and loop them over the hooks. Adjust as needed, and your frame is ready to display!

Pro Tip: Take your time with each step to ensure your frame hangs straight and securely.
