Artist’s Statement

Gail Nathanson is a professional oil painter who paints both on location, as well as in her studio.

“What interests me the most, as a visual artist, is to tell a story of the familiar. I am moved to paint images of the ordinary and unexceptional. Glimpses into the unremarkable corners of life are what inspire me. When I paint, I act as a storyteller, often leaving viewers with the task of filling in the blanks or finishing the story for themselves. I don’t want to give away too much detail, but enough to get the viewer started. One of the greatest influences on my work is the American painter, Edward Hopper. I look for high contrast on my subject matter and render the images in such a way that the viewer can place the light source by reading the shadows and the play of light.”

Artist’s Bio

Artist Gail Nathanson has been juried into many local and national exhibits, including most recently, The Philadelphia Sketch Club’s prestigious juried national “Small Oils Works” and over the years various national figure exhibitions, juried by Robert Liberace, Joanna Harmon and Juan Jr. Ramirez, among others. She has received many awards for her figurative work, as well as for her beachscapes and cityscapes. She is a member of various art guilds and societies and has shown in a number galleries.
