Inside the Frame Podcast Episode #19: Discovering Creativity Through Light, Culture, and Storytelling – A Conversation with Claudio Eshun

Claudio Eshun, known in the art world as Don Claude, recently joined the Frame Center podcast to share his inspiring journey as a photographer, artist, and educator. His story is one of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of an artist navigating both personal and professional challenges.

From Ghana to Massachusetts: A Journey of Identity

Claudio’s path to becoming an artist began in Ghana, continued in Italy, and eventually brought him to Massachusetts. These experiences shaped not only his identity but also his perspective on art. Having faced the complexities of being undocumented, Claudio discovered a unique freedom in digital spaces, allowing him to explore and express his artistry without borders.

“The digital world became a space where I could market myself and create without restrictions. It’s where Don Claude truly came to life,” Claudio shared.

A Passion for Photography and Framing

Claudio’s connection to photography stems from a deep appreciation for light and color. He likened the process of capturing a perfect shot to the rhythm of music, where the right moment simply resonates. His works often feature family members, such as his mother and sister, showcasing themes of ritual, heritage, and the passing of knowledge.
He’s also passionate about presenting his work professionally, having learned the importance of framing and museum-quality materials through his time at Frame Center. “Investing in the right frame and museum glass isn’t just about presentation—it’s about elevating the art itself,” he explained.

Cultural Roots and Storytelling

Claudio’s art often celebrates his Ghanaian heritage. Whether through traditional textiles like kente cloth or intimate portraits of family, his works highlight the beauty and resilience of his culture. One standout piece, “Lurking Shadows in the Statehouse,” features Claudio himself wearing kente cloth in a striking performance art photograph.

“With my immigration background, I can’t leave the country, but I stay connected to my roots by incorporating cultural elements into my art,” he said.

Artistic Milestones and Future Projects

Claudio’s work has been exhibited in prestigious spaces like the James Library, where his evocative photographs earned accolades. Despite his successes, he remains humble and motivated, using his platform to mentor students and encourage emerging artists.

Looking ahead to 2025, Claudio is developing an ambitious project titled “Green Card Series,” using laser-cut acrylic sheets to explore themes of identity and belonging. He’s also preparing for exhibitions at 13 Forest Gallery and Harvard, promising exciting new works that push the boundaries of his artistry.

The Power of Collaboration and Community

One of the most striking aspects of Claudio’s journey is his dedication to community and collaboration. From car rides filled with creative brainstorming to workshops with local art societies, Claudio emphasizes the importance of connection.

“Art isn’t created in isolation—it’s built through shared experiences and conversations,” he reflected.

Claudio’s story is a testament to the transformative power of art, culture, and storytelling. Whether he’s capturing light in a photograph, mentoring students, or exploring his heritage, Claudio’s work resonates deeply with those who encounter it.
