In Episode 37 of Inside the Frame Podcast, we sit down with Hanover-based musician and painter Aldous Collins, an energetic performer, thoughtful songwriter, and visual artist who brings authenticity and joy to everything he creates. Known for his upbeat music and playful painting style, Aldous shares the story of how he found his creative voice, the power of community, and what drives him to keep showing up for his art.
A Dual Creative Life: Music and Art
Though many know Aldous for his music, especially as the frontman of the Aldous Collins Band, his passion for art has been with him for decades. Originally a studio art major, Aldous rediscovered painting when his wife gifted him art supplies. From there, it blossomed into a vibrant second discipline.
“When I’m not vibing on songwriting, the painting comes out,” he shares. “It’s like a meditation. It clears the mind in a different way.”
His visual art style, often featuring playful animal portraits and expressive faces, balances humor, warmth, and originality. His “Brass Series,” where each piece was set against a brass background, gained notable traction with collectors across multiple states.
The Joy and Reality of Being an Artist
Aldous is candid about the challenges of life as an artist. “Everyone has barriers, but you do it because you’re called to,” he says. “If you understand art, music, and vulnerability; it helps you in business, life, and relationships.”
He emphasizes that the best art comes from honesty. “Sometimes I write songs that are more reflective, and someone will say, ‘People don’t want to hear that,’ but I’m human. I have other emotions. I want to be real.”
Still, he strives to bring positivity to his performances. “If people are spending their time and money to see you, I want to make sure it’s a good night for them.”
Levitate, Local Venues, and Community
Aldous is a familiar face in South Shore music circles, often playing at venues like Soundcheck Studios. He’s also returning to the Levitate Music & Arts Festival after nearly a decade. “I’ve always loved Levitate, it’s creative, unique, and inspiring. Just being there feels like a celebration of community.”
His art appreciation extends to supporting other artists, too. He frequently collects local art, especially when it comes with a personal connection. “There’s something powerful about knowing the story behind a piece,” he says. “That’s what makes it special.”
Advice and Encouragement
When it comes to creating and selling art, Aldous encourages artists to embrace the struggle while staying true to their voice. “You don’t need to be a virtuoso to create. You just need to keep showing up and putting in the work.”
And while he’s sold nearly all of his paintings via word-of-mouth and Facebook, he recently launched a site offering prints, a way to share more widely while maintaining authenticity.
